Making Connections to Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird.

On June 11th in 1963, President Kennedy addressed the American people on the subject of Civil Rights.

Indeed, Kennedy’s speech was very courageous –especially at a very volatile time in American history. Many believe that it was a contributing factor to why he was assassinated in October of that same year.

Today, unrest still occurs. And, the “difficulties …over discrimination exist in every state” that Kennedy spoke about still exist.

Listen –carefully– to what Kennedy says. What does he say that speaks to some of the themes in Lee’s great novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, published in 1950?
